Newcastle set to launch ‘huge offer’ to sign Olympiacos star – Big claims from Greece
Despite Paul Mitchell’s expected departure from Newcastle, the club should still remain committed to scouting and signing promising young talents with star potential.
From players like Antonio Cordero to Vakhtang Salia, Newcastle’s recruitment strategy has been focused on snapping up emerging talents across Europe before their rivals. Now, fresh reports from Greece suggest another young prospect may soon be on the club’s radar.
Newcastle eyeing Kostoulas move
Greek journalist Giorgos Tsanakas of Sport FM claims Newcastle are preparing a substantial bid for Olympiacos striker Babis Kostoulas. The 18-year-old forward, who has also caught the attention of Brighton, made an impact in both domestic competitions and the Europa League, helping Olympiacos secure a domestic double.
Kostoulas is under contract until 2030 and is expected to command a significant transfer fee. Just last month, The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported Brighton were willing to offer £30 million in a player-plus-cash deal for the teenager. With six goals and an assist in 21 league matches, and strong performances in Europe, Newcastle may be hoping to get ahead of Brighton in acquiring a player who could grow significantly in value.
Transfer noise and potential hurdles
That said, Newcastle supporters are no strangers to being caught up in transfer speculation, often fueled by agents and international media. A recent example is Joan Garcia of Espanyol, who was linked with a move to Tyneside before seemingly heading for Barcelona shortly after.
Unless credible local or top-tier sources confirm Newcastle’s interest in Kostoulas, this could be another case of a young player being hyped up through speculation.
Adding to the potential complexity is the ownership situation. Olympiacos are owned by Evangelos Marinakis, who also owns Nottingham Forest. Last summer, Marinakis reportedly resisted the idea of selling Anthony Elanga to Newcastle, suggesting he may be similarly reluctant to part with another promising talent especially to a Premier League competitor.
