‘Open secret’ player heading to Newcastle – Club’s salty statement hints at transfer unhappiness

Young Malaga forward Antoñito Cordero is on the verge of joining Newcastle United, with both Marca and La Opinión de Málaga confirming that the player is leaving on a free transfer.

According to Marca, Malaga released a short, 51-word statement on the matter, confirming Cordero’s departure once his contract expires on June 30, 2025. The announcement read:

“Antoñito Cordero will finish his journey at Málaga Football Club when his contractual connection ends on June 30, 2025. Through his representative agency, the natural player of Jerez de la Frontera has conveyed his decision not to renew with our entity. Good luck, Antonio.”

The outlet notes that the young attacker is now “off to Newcastle.”

La Opinión de Málaga echoes the report, stating that Cordero’s exit had long been expected, but is now officially confirmed by the club. The move to Newcastle represents a major step forward for Cordero, not just in terms of his football career, but financially as well. It will also be his first time living and playing outside of Spain.

Meanwhile, Malaga are left disappointed by the situation losing a homegrown talent to a Premier League side without compensation. Their brief and somewhat cold statement suggests dissatisfaction with how the player and his representatives handled the exit.
