Aston Villa join race for talented La Liga star with €25m release clause

Aston Villa have frequently looked to La Liga for signings since Unai Emery took charge, and that trend appears likely to continue this summer.
The club has been linked with several top-flight Spanish players, and their newest target is arguably the standout goalkeeper of the 2024-25 season.
Espanyol’s Joan Garcia has impressed with his performances, boasting the second-highest save percentage in La Liga (73.4%), the most saves per 90 minutes (3.9), and a league-best 8.5 goals prevented — well ahead of Osasuna’s Sergio Herrera (3.6).
Villa Eyeing Joan Garcia
The 24-year-old has played a key role in keeping Espanyol above the relegation zone, making him a hot prospect across Europe. Barcelona and Real Madrid are monitoring him, while Newcastle United have also shown interest. Now, according to Fabrizio Romano via CaughtOffside, Aston Villa have joined the pursuit.
With Emi Martinez expected to leave this summer, Garcia is seen as a potential first-choice replacement — a factor that could give Villa the edge over other suitors like Barca, Madrid, or Arsenal.
Garcia’s Release Clause Draws Interest
Garcia currently has a €25 million release clause, which would rise to €30 million if he is selected for Spain’s UEFA Nations League squad this summer. Regardless of the final fee, a move seems inevitable, and the Premier League is currently the most likely destination. While his next club remains uncertain, it’s increasingly clear Garcia won’t be at Espanyol come next season.
