Joelinton was visibly fuming at the Arsenal dugout following Newcastle United’s defeat on Sunday.
Another heartbreaking evening resulted in the Magpies being put to the sword at the death by one of the Premier League big boys. Newcastle were winning 1-0 with just six minutes remaining before goals from Mikel Merino and Gabriel turned the tide.
A dejected St James’ Park watched on as Eddie Howe’s men crumbled – just as they did against Liverpool last month. The defeat leaves Newcastle with just six points from as many games and one Premier League win all season.
Joelinton loses it
Footage from AFTV at full-time showed Joelinton in an altercation with Arsenal assistant Miguel Molina. A heated exchange then followed between the Brazilian and Mikel Arteta.
It is unclear – but perhaps not surprising – why Joelinton lost his cool given the fierce nature of the game. Several refereeing decisions proved controversial, with both teams claiming penalty shouts.
Gabriel – who bagged the stoppage-time winner – could have also seen red for lashing out at Nick Woltemade. Joelinton himself was booked in the closing stages for kicking the ball away.
‘It hurts’ – Eddie Howe
Speaking post-match, Howe admitted the manner of the defeat “hurt” while singling out Martin Odegaard for praise. He said: “Two really late goals here at home hurts. We have to reflect and acknowledge that we weren’t at our best. There was not a lack of effort but, from a footballing point of view, it wasn’t quite there.
“The number of corners was probably the key thing. I think (Martin) Odegaard made a difference to their overall performance. The weight of pressure eventually told. So no lack of effort but the little details have cost us.”
Sandro Tonali reflects
Sandro Tonali suggested Newcastle probably should have accepted the draw rather than going for the win. He added: “It is difficult to lose a game in the last five minutes, but we are professionals and we have to change as quickly as possible.
“We played a good game, especially in the first half, we were concentrated at all times. I think it was a good battle in the midfield, but we need to have maximum concentration over the whole 90 minutes. I want to take the positives into the next match.
“It was similar (to the Liverpool match) but I think we wanted to win the game until the last minute. I think sometimes we need to gain some experience and maybe a draw was the perfect result. I think we played a good game.”
