After nearly two years on the sidelines, NASCAR veteran Kurt Busch has officially been medically cleared to return to racing, ending a grueling battle with post-concussion symptoms that began in 2022.
The 2004 Cup Series Champion received final clearance from NASCAR’s medical team following a private evaluation and a series of successful simulator and short-track test sessions. Busch, 46, has not raced since suffering a head injury during qualifying at Pocono, an incident that sidelined him indefinitely and sparked renewed attention on driver safety in the sport.
“It’s been a long road—physically, mentally, emotionally—but I never stopped believing,” Busch said during an emotional press conference Friday. “I’m ready to strap in again and do what I love.”
While Busch has not yet confirmed a full-time return, sources say he’s in talks with 23XI Racing for a possible part-time schedule beginning this summer, with select races including Darlington, Indianapolis, and potentially the Bristol Night Race.
Denny Hamlin, co-owner of 23XI Racing, praised Busch’s perseverance:
“Kurt has been an inspiration to our whole team. If and when he’s ready, we’ve got a seat waiting for him.”

Busch has remained active during his recovery, serving as a mentor and advisor to 23XI’s driver lineup and participating in multiple safety panels.
